1st + 2nd place at Mtwapa Cup 2009

The 2009 Mtwapa Cup ended with a perfect result for Walter's fishing guests: Remo Straessle, Rene Stoecklin and Konrad Fierz marked the first place on Baloo. The World-Cup-Winners of 1997 were able to repeat the success they had in the Mtwapa Cup 2007. With four Sailfish - all tagged and relaeased - and one Wahoo weighing 16,4kg. They also won the trophy for the biggest fish.

Hans-Peter Bernegger came second. He fished on Nala and caught two Sailfish and one Tuna weighing 10,5kg. The competition took place on a sunny fishing day with calm sea.

New Engines for Nala

This week, we exchanged Nala's engines. We change the engines of all boats frequently to check them on land. This enables us to easily renew the seals and bearings.

La Marina - New Restaurant in Mtwapa Creek

A new restaurant opened at the beginning of 2009: La Marina. It is located at the entrance of Mtwapa Creek where you have a wonderful view of the ocean and also into the creek. La Marina offers daily fresh seafood, meat grills and cocktails. Especially in the evening, this restaurant has its own romantic atmosphere.

Besides Condor, the Swiss Airline Edelweiss and the German Airline Airberlin offer direct flights to Mombasa.
Edelweiss starts from Zuerich, Airberlin from Duesseldorf.

1st place at Eye Go Fishing Competition

Like in the last year, Harshil Raval dominated the Eye Go Fishing Competition in Mtwapa. With 11 Sailfish (all of them were tagged and released) and one Black Marlin he had an outstanding catch and marked the first place.

Tuna Season 2008

The Tuna Season is at it's peak! This year we have caught the most Tuna since 5 years.

The pictures show last Sunday's catch: 6 Yellowfin Tuna around 25kg.

New Bridge and Interior for Arielle

The new fly-bridge is optimized for a good view around the boat. Windows will be added to the light and strong fiberglas-construction during the next days.

In addition to the fly-brigde, we renewed the interior design with new and more comfortable resting places.

Baloo is in the dock

We are using the time in the low-season to overhaul Baloo. She was fitted with two overhauled engines and right now she is in the dock for a new underwater painting.

Decreasing hotel prices

The room rates in Mombasa's hotels have been decreasing constantly since February. Offers for 3-star and 4-star hotels starting around 30€/person (all inclusive, double room)!

The reason for the decreasing room rates was Kenya's bad press concerning the presidential elections in February. The fanatic supporters of the two competing parties ran a few riots in Nairobi which is 560km away from our fishing base in Mombasa. Overall we didn't feel any consequences of the riots at the coast. In Nairobi itself, only party supporters were harmed and no tourists or foreigners.
All of my regular customers confirm that they don't feel any change in comparison to their previous holidays.

Raval's catches in February

February was an extraordinary fishing-month.
My friend Harshil Raval from Mtwapa fished on four Sundays in February and caught:

4x Marlin
12x Sailfish

He fished 3 days on Baloo and 1 day on Nala.
